HeritageAs an island nation, Britain has a long and rich maritime history and our coastline is dotted with sites linked to naval, mercantile, industrial and imperial power. Many of these sites contain a wealth of historical / archaeological information and artefacts, some may be without rival in the world in terms of their number and diversity. Ancient port towns can still provide a direct link with Britain's maritime past. The potential for damage and/or destruction of these important sites
by new port development or extension/dredging works is significant. For
more information about the need to conserve areas of historic importance
go to "These assets are unique and once they have been damaged or destroyed
they cannot recover or be recreated." |
