Heritage

As an island nation, Britain has a long and rich maritime history and our coastline is dotted with sites linked to naval, mercantile, industrial and imperial power.

Many of these sites contain a wealth of historical / archaeological information and artefacts, some may be without rival in the world in terms of their number and diversity.

Ancient port towns can still provide a direct link with Britain's maritime past.

The potential for damage and/or destruction of these important sites by new port development or extension/dredging works is significant. For more information about the need to conserve areas of historic importance go to
www.english-heritage.org.uk

"These assets are unique and once they have been damaged or destroyed they cannot recover or be recreated."
