East and South England , showing locations of the major proposed deep sea container port developments.

In response to predicted growth in demand for deep sea container port capacity, there are now four proposals to develop new 'superports' or port expansion to handle containers.

Major proposals for Bathside Bay , Dibden Bay , and London Gateway (Shell Haven) will have massive implications for the environment and local communities and throughout the regions as traffic levels will increase significantly.

In addition, there are proposals to reconfigure Felixstowe South which will involve the reclamation of an area of subtidal habitat. The impact of this is currently being assessed but early indications are that the environmental impacts are likely to be much less than the other proposed developments.
