English waste strategy published

The Government has published a new waste strategy for England.

Friends of the Earth supports much of the strategy including:

• Promotion of weekly food waste collections.
  
  
• Generating renewable energy by putting food waste into anaerobic digestion.
  
  
• Letting councils reward those who recycle more.
  
  
• Less focus on resource-wasting, climate-damaging incineration.

But the Government has set an unambitious target to recycle just half our household waste by 2020.

We could recycle much more:

• Cambridgeshire County Council already recycles over half its waste.
  
  
• Flanders in Belgium recycles nearly three quarters.

Tackling climate change requires more ambitious targets and we believe that the UK should be aiming for 75% recycling by 2015.
