Get Serious About CO2

Councils and local carbon budgets
7 September 2010

Council leaders across the country are backing a Friends of the Earth petition for legislation to support local action to cut emissions.

Chris Huhne, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, asked councils what they could do to help tackle climate change and meet UK Climate Change Act targets.

Leading councils have responded by calling for a system of local carbon budgets - that would mean every council was supported to do its bit in coordinating local action on climate change.

The petition was launched by these councils:

Bristol, West Sussex, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle & Haringey

with more joining each day.

Here is a full list of the councils that have signed the petition so far.

Can you get your council to join the list?

This is the text of the petition to Chris Huhne.

You can download model letters to send to your council leader here:

This is the briefing on local carbon budgets to send to your council leader as well.
