Commenting on the opening of the 14 Megawatt wood energy power station at Port Talbot today [1], Gordon James, Director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, said:

"This power station is welcome because generating energy from wood emits far less climate changing gases than burning coal or gas. We also welcome that the fuel will be sourced from Wales.

"We are disappointed though that it is not using the waste heat as a source of energy. The immense threat posed by climate change means that we should be burning fuels in the most efficient way possible.

"We hope that the power station will be using the best technology so it does not contribute to the air pollution that is such a concern for local people."

NOTES

  1. The £33 million Western Wood Energy Plant, which is now fully operational, is being officially opened today by First Minister, Rhodri Morgan
