Welsh Secretary praised for installing solar panels

03/01/2006

The decision by Welsh Secretary, Peter Hain, to install electricity generating solar panels on the roof of his home in Neath has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth Cymru.

A spokesperson for the organisation, Gordon James, said:

"We welcome Mr Hain's practical demonstration of support for this form of clean energy in response to the crises of climate change.

"Unlike coal, gas and oil, solar cells generate electricity without emitting carbon dioxide and other gases that are changing the climate and posing such a threat to future generations.

"Along with other forms of renewable energy, such as wind, wave, tidal and bio-fuels, solar power could make a significant contribution to a cleaner energy future [1]. Renewable energy sources are abundant in Wales and are a far more acceptable option than nuclear power.

"The Government is now quite correctly offering some grant aid to encourage the installation of these renewable energy systems on a domestic scale. Although useful, it falls far short of the support the taxpayer has had to give to nuclear power.

"The Secretary of State's action also demonstrates that we should all do more to reduce the environmental impact of our lifestyles."
