LNG warning in massive fuel blast

14/12/2005

The massive blast at the fuel depot near Hemel Hempstead should cause the authorities to halt and re-assess the LNG developments at Milford Haven, according to Friends of the Earth Cymru.

Proposals to build two large LNG terminals and storage depots close to the towns of Milford Haven, Neyland and Pembroke Dock have met with strong opposition from a number of local people and organisations because of their proximity to populated areas.

Gordon James of Friends of the Earth Cymru said:

"Accidents like today's explosion at Hemel Hempstead do happen. If something similar were to occur with LNG close to a populated area the consequences would be far worse because of the highly inflammable nature of the fuel.

"Experts in the USA, where they have more experience of dealing with LNG, have warned that these terminals should be located at least two to three miles from populated areas. Yet, on the shores of Milford Haven, the LNG terminals and depots are being built within a mile or two of towns where over 20,000 people live.

" We do not object to LNG being imported but these facilities should be sited away from populated areas."
