An over-sized and polluting waste incinerator could be coming to Cardiff, if plans submitted to Cardiff Council are given the go-ahead.

A planning application is with Cardiff Council for an incinerator to be built in Trident Park, Cardiff Bay.

Why is incineration bad for the environment? Incineration:

Encourages more waste
The proposed Cardiff incinerator is designed to process 350,000 tonnes of waste a year. This is three times more than the waste predicted for all five surrounding local authority areas.
Increases congestion
More than 250 lorries will be bringing waste from all around south Wales to Cardiff every day. This is a 3% increase in traffic to add to the congestion and pollution on Cardiff's roads.
Generates energy inefficiently
Incinerators that generate electricity produce more greenhouse gases than gas fired power stations - see Dirty Truths for more information.
Causes pollution
Smoke, gases and ash from incinerators can contain harmful dioxins which are a cause of cancer.

I wish to object to the planning application for a waste incinerator plant at Trident Park, Cardiff (ref 08/2616)for the following reasons: - The incineration process will produce toxic waste - It will badly affect the people who live and work in the surrounding area - It will also affect people who live on the routes used to transport the waste to the site and to remove the ash - It will significantly increase the amount of traffic on local roads - Viridor's lack of experience in operating this type of plant raises safety concerns and could lead to emissions which would harm people's health - During the summer there will be smells emitted from the site and from the lorries transporting the waste - It could cause blight on homes in the surrounding area - It will have a detrimental impact on neighbouring businesses - The waste is not being disposed of as close to the point of its generation as possible - The chimney stack will be higher than the existing one on the site
