Impacts in Wales

Climate change is one of the most serious threats that the human species has had to face in its history.

Climate change is already causing detectable changes in Wales, such as flooding.

By 2080 the UK Climate Impacts Programme predicts that Wales will likely experience:

• greater warmth all year round by 1.1 - 2.9 degrees celsius
• more rainfall in winter by 7-24 per cent
• less rainfall in summer by 7-14 per cent
• greater annual rainfall by 2-9 per cent
• a rise of sea level of 18-79 cm
• higher average winds speeds of 1-4 per cent.

There will also be more extreme weather events:

• more frequent and more violent storms
• more flooding
• more very severe gales
• more drought years.

Such climate changes will have adverse implications on public health and safety, buildings and their insurance, tourism, agriculture, coastal erosion, forests, moorland, rare plant species and wildlife.
