Nuclear

The nuclear industry has proposed that a programme of new nuclear power stations be built in the UK.

Friends of the Earth Cymru opposes nuclear power because of:

  • the problem of long-lasting highly radioactive waste storage
  • the potential for horrific accidents and long-lasting contamination
  • the potential for terrorist attack
  • an enticement for nuclear weapons proliferation.

There is an abundance of cost-competitive renewable energy resources worldwide, and plenty of opportunities to improve energy efficiency. So, there is simply no reason to take any of the enormous if not incalculable security, health and economic risks with nuclear power.

The UK and Wales should show global leadership in rejecting a new nuclear power programme and instead invest in clean and safe renewable energy technologies and efficiency measures to secure our energy needs and address global warming.
