Local Food

Transporting food thousands of miles across the world causes pollution from aeroplanes and leads to wasteful overpackaging. Powerful supermarkets are gaining control of more and more of the food chain, forcing down the prices paid to farmers and squeezing local shops out of business.

Friends of the Earth Cymru would like to restore a direct link between farmers and consumers. Buying local food, whether from shops or directly from farmers' markets or the farm gate, is an easy and fun way for people to reduce their personal impacts on the environment.

Friends of the Earth Cymru works to encourage:

• people across Wales to shop at local farmers markets
• The National Assembly and Local Councils in Wales to support local food markets
• Welsh farmers to take advantage of opportunities to diversify and meet local food needs.
