Public transport
Travelling by public transport rather than private car brings a number
of environmental, social and economic advantages. But despite the advantages
of public transport, the relatively low cost and convenience of motoring,
has seen a decline in bus and rail passengers and more private car use.
Friends of the Earth Cymru is campaigning for:
- a far greater share of the Welsh Assembly and Local Authority transport
budget to be focussed on expanding rail, bus and community public
transport services
- improved public transport infrastructure that would also integrate
with cycling, walking and car parking provision.
Better public transport services and less car use can:
- encourage and enable more environmentally minded travel by all
- reduce climate change emissions, energy and resource use
- reduce traffic and economically damaging traffic congestion
- help restore healthy air quality
- improve road safety
- enable the poorest car-less households to travel to the facilities
and services they need
- enable people to work or rest while travelling.
Unfortunately, traffic growth and calls for faster roads to outlying
areas brings pressure for more road-building which directly undermines
public transport improvements.
