Dai the Dragon demands action at global climate talks

A twenty foot blue dragon presented a scroll of demands on climate action to Jane Davidson AM on the steps of the Senedd. The demands - and the dragon - came from Stop Climate Chaos Cymru (SCCC), a coalition of organisations ranging from environment and development charities to unions, faith, community and women's groups

Haf Elgar of Friends of the Earth Cymru, a member of SCCC, says that good progress can made at Cancun in Mexico.

"Last year the Assembly unanimously backed our calls for a strong deal in Copenhagen," she said. "One year on, Dai the Dragon is back at the Assembly delivering a clear message and mandate to Jane Davidson from the people of Wales to stand up for tackling climate change in Cancun."

Global action on climate change required:

• Rich countries to cut emissions first, by at least 40% by 2020
• A global climate fund to enable developing countries to develop cleanly
• A deal to protect forests

The Environment Minister believes there is a role for Wales at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December.  "Although Wales is a small nation, we have lots to shout about," she said.

"I am keen to share some of the exciting work that we are taking forward here in Wales, and learn from the other approaches that are being taken across the globe."
