UK Government reopens nuclear debate
1 February 2006

UK Government has announced it will be considering nuclear in a new review of our future energy needs.

Wales has two nuclear power stations. Trawsfynydd is closed and Wylfa is due to close in 2010. You can have your say in the consultation to ensure that Wales has a nuclear free energy future.

About nuclear

Friends of the Earth Cymru opposes nuclear power because it is unsafe and uneconomic.

Nuclear is unsafe because:

  • Security threats
Power stations and radioactive materials could be terrorist targets
  • Toxic waste
Pollutes environment. Waste needs careful management for thousands of years .
  • Global proliferation
The availability of deadly materials increases

Nuclear power is uneconomic because:

  • Dependent on subsidies
Nuclear power stations require subsidies in order to be built and maintained
  • Expensive waste
It will cost taxpayers £60 billion or more to decommission existing power stations
  • High costs
Construction, waste, insurance, security and running problems have added to costs

Protestors highlighting the thousands of years of a nuclear legacy

Did you know? Nuclear power contributes just 3.5% to the UK's total energy needs

Friends of the Earth Cymru belives the nuclear option should be avoided and we should invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Nuclear power must be rejected as unsafe, uneconomic and unnecessary.
