Recycling in Monmouthshire

Waste is a huge problem in Wales. Recycling initiatives are slowly taking off, but Wales is still far behind Europe.

In Monmouthshire it's a different story.

Monmouthshire's recycling rate is double that of two years ago. And it's all down to the dedication of Friends of the Earth local groups and residents.

Recycling history

In 2003, thanks to members from Chepstow Friends of the Earth and Abergavenny and Crickhowell Friends of the Earth working with other local groups and residents, Monmouthshire Community Recycling was launched.


Monmouthshire Community Recycling

The enterprise is a community based, not-for-profit company run by volunteers committed to providing recycling services and education.

2004. Judged the best new recycling project in the UK and awarded the ECT Newcomer of the year award.

Monmouth Community Recycling has achieved all this in a relatively short period of time in a traditionally difficult operating environment, and clearly has the potential to build on its success ECT Recycling - Award Sponsors

2005. Household black box scheme now covers around 75% of people living locally. The materials collected on a weekly basis are:

  • Paper
  • Glass
  • Cans
  • Textiles
  • Foil
