Scarweather Sands offshore windfarm
1 August 2003

The Scarweather Sands wind farm in Swansea Bay is one of three proposed offshore wind farms around the Welsh coast. It will produce enough electricity to power 82,000 homes.

Friends of the Earth Cymru supports the Scarweather Sands proposal because it would:

  • Help prevent global warming
  • Provide safe, secure and locally generated electricity
  • Create jobs
  • Help reduce the use of dirty fossil fuels.

Public opinion in Wales for wind power is very supportive, but some residents have expressed concern regarding the effects on their quality of life and tourism.

Friends of the Earth Cymru have yet to see any evidence to support these claims. Indeed the wind farm is likely to provide opportunities for tourism such as boat trips and recreational fishing. There would also be jobs during construction and operation of the scheme.

Considering the environmental problems caused by burning oil, coal and gas, the Scarweather Sands windfarm would be a sleek and positive local energy solution for the communities around Swansea Bay.
