Save the Gwent Levels

The Welsh Assembly Government wants to build a new motorway across the Gwent Levels. More road building and more traffic will lead to more climate changing emissions.

Friends of the Earth thinks this road shouldn't get the go-ahead because it will:

Endanger one of our top wetland wildlife sites
Create more traffic problems not less
Waste money that could be spent on much needed local public transport

I am writing to you about the Welsh Assembly Government plans to build a new stretch of motorway across the Gwent Levels in South East Wales.
As you may be aware, the Gwent Levels is one of Wales' finest wildlife areas. The drainage channels (known as reens) are unique and much of the area is designated as Sites of Special
Scientific Interest. The proposed road, if built, would cause extensive damage to habitats that are home to otters and water voles, birds like Lapwing, Redshank and Snipe, great crested newts and flowers such as Frogbit, Marsh marigold and Ragged robin. 
Building new roads can generate traffic. This would not only lead to a greater impact on local communities but will also increase carbon emissions. This would damage Wales's reputation for sustainable development and will leave a legacy for future inhabitants of our country and the planet in general. 
Furthermore, the economic benefits are dubious. The WAG hopes that the  road will bring wealth into Wales but it could equally suck wealth out of Wales by allowing more of South Wales to be serviced from Bristol. An alternative scheme to spend the money available to develop and promote a high quality public transport system in South East Wales would deliver the economic and regeneration aims of the Welsh Assembly Government more effectively.
 
I urge you strongly, as my elected representative in the Welsh Assembly, to do your utmost to ensure that this motorway through the Gwent Levels is not built.
