Climate Campaigners welcome Britain's first Offshore Windfarm
Environmental campaign group Friends of the Earth Cymru (FOE Cymru) today welcomed the commissioning of The UK's first offshore windfarm (1). The two 2MW turbines are located 1km out into the North Sea off Blyth Harbour on the north east coast of England. FOE Cymru say that offshore wind energy can make a significant contribution to a fully sustainable UK energy policy, not least because there is a huge energy resource in the winds over the British Isles. The UK also has leading offshore engineering skills that can be transferred from the oil and gas industry. So its now up to public and political to recognise and seize the benefits.
Neil Crumpton, FOE Cymru energy spokesperson said:
"Offshore windfarms offer a major contribution to environmental
responsibility twined with a major industrial opportunity. There is
enough wind energy offshore to generate three times the UK's electricity
consumption at very reasonable prices considering the benefits in tackling
global warming and securing major safe, clean and renewable energy supplies.
Wales with its coastal Objective One areas and the Assembly's sustainable development policies has a great opportunity to claim a leading stake in the globally expanding renewable energy industry."
