Responding to the AA's report, announced today, on the most dangerous roads in the UK, Friends of the Earth Cymru (FOE Cymru) said that targeting the roads budget on road safety not major road building would secure the best safety benefits.
Neil Crumpton, transport spokesperson for FOE Cymru said,
"Hundreds of miles of A roads in Wales are below what are current design recommendations and it would cost a fortune to upgrade them. Especially so to the fast designs which encourage speeding, that are currently favoured by some local authorities.
Rather than major road upgrading or dualling, the realistic option is to target roads budget cash to resolving design problems at crash cluster sites together with measures to tackle excessive speed and poor driving.
This would ensure that more of the available transport budget can be directed to the comparatively more modest rail network and bus service improvements, which are much safer ways of transport than increasing road traffic."
