Friends of the Earth Cymru has welcomed the announcement in today's Queen's Speech that more transport related powers will be delegated to the Welsh Assembly.
Friends of the Earth Cymru's Assembly Campaigner, Gordon James, said:
"We welcome both the delegation of more powers on transport to the Welsh Assembly and the emphasis on improving road safety outlined in today's Queens Speech.
We urge the Assembly to use these extra powers to significantly improve public transport in Wales in order to bring about the social, environmental and economic benefits that are in keeping with the Assembly's sustainable development remit. It is important to remember that a third of people in Wales do not own a car.
Proposals to support a subsidised and unnecessary north-south Wales air link and a costly and environmentally damaging Gwent Levels motorway would be strongly opposed."
