The plan, by an American company, to manufacture a new type of solar cell on a site at Wentloog, Cardiff has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth Cymru.
Gordon James, Assembly Campaigner for the group, said:
“We believe that this initiative could have environmental and economic benefits for Wales.
“It is now clear that the carbon dioxide emitted when we burn fuels like coal, oil and gas is having a serious impact on climate world-wide. We have to switch quickly to cleaner sources of energy, such as wind, tidal, wave and solar power, if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
“We hope that this new type of solar power will be able to make a contribution to Wales reducing its carbon dioxide emissions and also help the Welsh Assembly Government achieve its aim of making Wales “a global showcase for clean energy”.
“We urge the Welsh Assembly Government to introduce planning policies that would encourage greater use of solar technologies. In England, for instance, the Housing and Planning Minister, Yvette Cooper, has announced that she expects all local authorities to require on-site renewable technologies, such a solar power, in new buildings.”
