Anglesey tidal scheme welcomed by green campaigners

A proposal to site seven tidal turbines in the sea a mile off the Anglesey coast has been welcomed by environmental campaigners. The marine current turbines would create one of the world's first commercial-scale tidal stream projects.

Friends of the Earth Cymru energy campaigner Neil Crumpton said:

"We welcome this proposal to tap into the considerable tidal energy resource off the Anglesey coast. For once the UK has a technological lead in a renewable energy system which can bring jobs and energy security while reducing damaging carbon emissions.

"There would be some visual impact as the top of the turbine structures would extend nine metres above sea level. Yet by far the biggest visual impact along this 15 mile stretch of heritage coastline is the looming bulk of the Wylfa nuclear power station."
