'Hydrogen highway' welcomed by green group

11 February 2010

Responding to the expected announcement today (12 Feb) that the M4 in South Wales is to become a so-called "hydrogen highway" with alternative energy refuelling points at strategic locations, Gordon James, Director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, said:

"This is excellent news as it will help to reduce emissions of climate changing gases from transport [1] whilst boosting the green economy and creating jobs in Wales.

"We are pleased that the Welsh Assembly Government is promising to produce the electricity and hydrogen by means of renewable energy sources, such as wind and tidal power. It is essential that this is done if carbon emissions are to be reduced.

"While greening transport is important, it is also essential that major efforts are made to reduce our dependence on cars by improving public transport, cycling and walking facilities.

"Following last year's scrapping of plans to build the Gwent Levels Motorway, this shows that we are moving in the right direction."
