Sea Empress Appeal

In response to the reduction in the fine imposed on the Milford Haven Port Authority following their guilty plea in the Sea Empress trial, a Friends of the Earth Cymru spokesperson said:

"The substantial reduction in the fine gives the wrong signal to industry and to polluters. Parliament has passed environmental laws and these should be given the same status as other law.

Friends of the Earth has always argued that the Department of Transport should have been in the dock alongside the Milford Haven Port Authority and should have shared the financial penalty imposed as a result of the oil spill.

The Sea Empress disaster was a severe economic blow to Pembrokeshire in many respects and should provide a strong case for the County to receive extra aid and financial assistance."
