Assembly government says Wales will stay GM free

24 February 2009

The Welsh Assembly Government today (Tuesday 24th February) confirmed its intention to keep Wales GM free.

Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones' announcement of plans for new laws protecting farmers and consumers in Wales from GM crops has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth Cymru.

The new rules on coexistence between GM and non-GM crops will mean farms in Wales will have the highest level of protection from GM contamination possible within EU rules.

This is in stark contrast with proposals in England and Northern Ireland, which will allow a far higher level of GM contamination to other crops, and no public register of where GM crops are grown.

Haf Elgar, Friends of the Earth Cymru campaigner, said: "Welsh farmers have deservedly gained an excellent reputation for high quality produce. We need to protect this reputation, as our success depends upon it.

"Friends of the Earth Cymru is delighted that the Welsh Assembly Government is working hard to protect crops and consumers in Wales from GM contamination. The Assembly Government, Assembly Members and Welsh consumers all agree that food, farming and the environment in Wales must be kept GM free.

"Today's announcement is a clear signal to biotech companies that their GM crops are not welcome in Wales. With tough proposals on contamination levels, liability and a public register, the Welsh Government is following a much stronger line against GM than their Westminster counterparts.

"GM is bad for the environment, has done nothing to tackle world hunger, and may well be bad for our health. The public have a right to know where GM crops are being grown, and a right to food that is guaranteed free from GM."
