our habitats to climate change
(PDF format 117K) July

in Wales are the loss of alpine habitat on Snowdon as the snow disappears,
and the threat to upland areas.
New Energy
Revolution
(PDF format 118K) July
2005
New energy technologies could be the next revolution in the heartlands
of the old industrial revolution. Technologies such as fuel cells and
tidal lagoons are becoming more feasible as energy sources than ever before.
Renewable
Energy not Nuclear Power
(PDF format 118K) July
2005
Nuclear power simply cannot supply clean or safe energy and its waste
is already a dangerous legacy for future generations in Wales. Renewable
energy from wind farms to micro-generation can supply Wales' energy needs.
Road to
Ruin
(PDF format 120K) July
2005
The road building plans in Wales will contribute to climate change and
will take funding away from public transport. The motorway proposed across
the Gwent Levels should be scrapped, and the funding instead allocated
to local public transport links in the area, and upgrading the rail and
coach services.
Climate Concern:
Attitudes to Climate Change and Windfarms in Wales
(PDF format 615K) September
2004
The Welsh Consumer Council and Friends of the Earth Cymru carried out
a Wales-wide survey in March 2004, part-funded by the Countryside Council
for Wales. The report found that the majority of people think that human
activity is contributing to climate change, and most people identified
in particular the burning of fossil fuels as the cause. Nearly half of
the people surveyed were in support of onshore wind farms.
Climate
Change is Real, Support Wind Energy (PDF
format 135K) September 2004
Friends of the Earth Cymru's briefing note explains the issue of climate
change, and the need to change to renewable energy sources, in particular
wind energy to address the issue. The Scarweather Sands offshore wind
farm proposal is part of the solution.

renewable energy industry. The briefing includes proposed targets for
a range of renewable technologies.
A Severn
Barrage or tidal lagoons?
(PDF format 68K) January
2004
This briefing compares the Severn Barrage scheme with a new electricity
generating technology called tidal lagoons which could also be built in
the Severn Estuary. The study indicates that, in terms of cost of electricity,
amount of electricity generated, environmental effects and most other
considerations, the lagoons would likely be a far better option than the
Barrage.

of energy provision and needs in Wales stressing the importance of addressing

Assembly Government Consultation - Energy Saving Wales, Energy Efficiency
Action Plan
(PDF format 114K)
June 2004
Friends of the Earth Cymru's critical response to the Welsh Assembly Government's
consultation document, 'Energy Saving Wales - Energy Efficiency Action
Plan'. It concludes that the plan amounts to little more than a reiteration
of standard energy efficiency information and advice and is, as it stands,
unlikely to change anything much at all. Nine recommendations, such as
setting explicit energy saving targets and providing significantly more
funding to achieve these targets, are made.
Response
to the Economic Development Committee Report on the review of energy policy
in Wales Part 2: Energy Efficiency
(PDF format 128K)
February 2003
Friends of the Earth Cymru's response calling for the Assembly to set
high energy efficiency targets for Wales. To achieve this the response
argues for the Assembly to implement policies and practical projects that
will contribute directly to a reduction in fossil fuel consumption and
greenhouse gases.
Public
attitudes to wind energy in Wales
(PDF format 151K)
September 2002
An independent telephone survey by Market Research Wales, commissioned
by Friends of the Earth Cymru, shows very high support for more Welsh
windfarms both on and offshore. The survey found that 71% of the public
in Wales would support a doubling of the current 360 onshore wind turbines
in Wales while 87% favoured offshore wind turbines rather than new nuclear
power stations.

Assembly for Wales consultation on renewable energy
(PDF format 108K)
July 2002

Planning
justice for Wales
(PDF format 138K) September
2002
This briefing argues that the planning system in Wales is unfair
because developers enjoy a right of appeal denied to local residents or
other objectors. The briefing makes the case for a limited right of appeal
for these "third parties" and suggests how this could be achieved
without major delays in the planning system.

(PDF format 39K) January
2006

for Wales, and should be clearly defined with clear guidance on the use
of the power.

assessment of the mainstreaming of sustainable development by the Welsh
Assembly Government and local authorities in Wales
(PDF format) January 2004
This report examines the Welsh Assembly Government's commitment to sustainable
development, with particular reference to its relationship with local

that the Assembly Government is failing to give a clear lead and is allowing
councils in Wales to get away with unsustainable practices.
Welsh
Assembly Government Consultation - Intra-Wales Scheduled Air Services
(PDF format 121K) June
2004
This consultation response to the Assembly details why an intra-Wales
air service would only offer a marginal and expensive time saving for
many if not most coast to coast journeys when compared to upgraded and
more frequent rail services. The air service would also be very socially
exclusive and the ongoing subsidies would encourage more travel and tourism
by air resulting in more energy intensive and polluting lifestyles.

building and proposes an affordable express rail service, hi-tec coach
service and cost-effective road-safety upgrading package instead.
Road upgrading,
help or hindrance to the peripheral economies of Wales?
(PDF format 89K) May
1998
The report, focusing on Wales, highlights the many negative economic impacts
which can occur through road upgrading. Alternatives to building new roads
are suggested as a means of achieving a more sustained economic regeneration.
Zero-waste in Wales
