Wales still GM free

The campaign to keep Wales GM free has meant that no GM crops have been grown in Wales since 2002 and no (legal) plantings of GM oilseed rape or beet in Wales since 1998.

Campaigning in Wales against GM crops

Many of Friends of the Earth's campaigns could not be won without the support and dedication of supporters like you. Below is a selection of our recent success stories for this campaign.

November 2003

Wales continued its strong stance against GM crops by joining other regions of Europe, including Tuscany and Upper-Austria, to demand the right to stay GM free. In a declaration to the European Commission the regions argued that they must have the right to declare themselves a GMO free zone or region.

September 2003

The National Assembly commits itself to opposing plans by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to remove the right to speak about health issues at hearings to discuss new agricultural seeds. The National Assembly argue that this right must stay or an equivalent right be created somewhere else in the system.

May 2001

The National Assembly leads the way and becomes the first Government in Europe to set statutory separation distances between GM and conventional crops effectively stopping GM crop trials taking place in Wales

May 2000

The National Assembly unanimously passes a GM free Wales policy drafted and campaigned for by Friends of the Earth Cymru.
