England's East Midlands is home to over four million people. Most of the region (80%) is devoted to agriculture and almost four out of ten people live in rural areas.
Its diverse landscape includes cities, Britain's first National Park and Sherwood Forest, where Robin Hood planned his own form of social justice.
Wildlife loss in the East Midlands
In the past few decades the East Midlands region has lost more natual habitats and wildlife than any other in England.
Did you know?
On average, one plant species becomes extinct in the East Midlands each year.
The region is also experiencing mounting pressure from:
- Over-development
- Traffic pollution
- Climate change
- Water shortages
East Midlands campaigns
Friends of the Earth is working on the following campaigns:

Everyone in the East Midlands will be affected by the East Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy. - Climate change
Almost 20% of the region's land is already at risk of flooding. This will increase as temperatures rise. - Transport
The East Midlands is under growing pressure from road and airport expansion.
