Panel reports on the London plan
The Mayor's London Plan covers all aspects of London life from housing and transport to climate change and the economy.
The London Plan affects all Londoners
Following a public hearing, an independent Panel has reviewed the Mayor's revisions to the Plan.
The Panel:
- Renewable energy
Supported the Mayor's proposal for a stronger CO2 emissions reduction target by requiring many developments to generate renewable energy onsite.
- Lower CO2 emissions targets
Supported the Mayor's proposal to weaken the targets from those in the current Plan. These targets are also weaker than those in the Mayor's own Climate Change Action Plan.
- Reducing the need to travel
The Panel recommended that reducing the need to travel should cover all modes of transport. The Mayor had proposed that reducing the need to travel should only cover journeys by car.
- Heathrow expansion
The Panel said that in order to be consistent with Government policy, the Plan should not refer to the Mayor's opposition to further Heathrow expansion.
What happens next
The Mayor must take account of the Panel's report before he submits the final plan for the Government's approval.
The final plan is expected to be published in the first quarter of 2008.
