London's elections 2008
On 1 May Londoners elect their Mayor and Assembly Members for the next four years.
Environmental issues will be a key focus for the candidates. The vote will decide who leads London and whether the capital will rise to the challenge of tackling climate change, raise Londoners' quality of life and succeeding as a economy without adding to environmental damage.
Friends of the Earth is asking all candidates for Mayor and the Assembly candidates to say where they stand on key issues:
London leads on climate change
- Commit to high savings in the amount of carbon dioxide London produces. The world's top scientists say we must start reducing emissions by at least 80 per cent
- Clear plans to save energy in London homes and buildings and to use far more cleaner, renewable energy technologies
A thriving low-carbon sustainable economy
- Start developing London as a low-carbon and sustainable economy, where gaps between the better off and the most disadvantaged people and areas are reduced, and where wealth is produced with less damage and with better use of limited resources
Transport for a sustainable city
- Say "no" to current proposals to build a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow airport to avoid compromising London's ability to meet its climate change targets and Londoners' well-being
- Say "no" to the expansion of London City Airport to avoid compromising London's ability to meet its climate change targets and Londoners' well-being
- Tackling road traffic, its congestion, carbon emissions, air pollution and other effects both in central London and across the whole of the capital – also helping to reduce health inequalities
Advance 'environmental rights' in London
- Introduce an Environmental Justice Code giving Londoners proper rights to participate in environmental decision-making which affects them
Friends of the Earth will publish results of how the candidates have responded to these key issues for London.
