Once an industrial powerhouse, the economy of North East England is still affected by the 20th century decline in ship building and coal mining.

Away from some revived areas, the economy continues to struggle with a widening poverty gap and low life expectancy.

The test for the region is to support and develop communities without causing the environmental damage of the past.

People need to be given a proper say in decisions made about their lives and local areas.

  The North East regional spatial strategy provides a masterplan of development through to 2021.
• Aviation
  Expansion is planned for Durham & Tees Valley and Newcastle.
• Environmental justice
  Giving communities a voice in Teesside.
