Airport expansion in the North West

The Government's 2003 Aviation White Paper, includes plans to expand Manchester and Liverpool airports.

The effects of airport expansion in the region include :

• Increased car pollution and congestion
  Lots of extra traffic on the M56, A513 and A538 for example
  
• Destruction of natural habitats
  The expansion of Manchester airport could destroy 22.5 hectares of ancient woodland

Worst of all, airport expansion would add to climate change when action is needed now to curb it.

If the plans for Manchester go ahead:

• Passenger numbers will double to 40 million by 2015.
• Up to 83,000 people could be severely affected by noise pollution.
