Renewable Energy in the North West

The North West has more sites generating electricity from renewable sources than any other English region.

Lambrigg Wind Farm in Cumbria became fully operational in September 2000 and at that time was the largest wind farm constructed in England since 1993. It has:

• Five turbines.
• Generates enough electricity to meet the annual needs of around 4,000 homes.
• Avoids the release of about 14,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

In 2002, a survey of residents living near to the wind farm showed that:

• 74% of people supported the farm.
• 71% thought that the farm had had no effect on the number of people visiting the area.

These findings echo other surveys which have shown that support for wind power schemes tends to be higher among people who have direct experience of an operating wind farm.
