South East

images of South East England

South East England is a wealthy region but economic success is not shared by everyone.  The region contains areas of severe poverty

The region is home to eight million people, more than the populations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined.

The region has the highest ecological footprint and is responsible for the most carbon dioxide emissions of the English regions.  It is the region that has most to gain from reducing consumption of natural resources.

Did you know

People in the South East travel further than those in any other region - 13,483 km per person per year.  85% of these journeys are by car.

South East Campaigns

Friends of the Earth is working on the following campaigns:

  • Development masterplan
Everyone will be affected by the South East Plan, the blueprint for future development in the region.
  • Climate change
This region is already suffering the impacts of climate change and we support projects which are promoting a low carbon future.
  • Transport
Planned expansion of airports and roads will damage the environment.
  • Countryside
The region is under threat from development. Plans to create a new National Park for the South Downs will help to protect and enhance this area.
