Climate change in the South West
1 July 2008

During this century, the people of the South West will see changes to their lifestyle and environment as a result of climate change.

Effects of climate change in South West

  • Fishing
More than half of all fish landings in England are made by the South West fleet. These will be affected as fish are very sensitive to small changes in sea temperature.
  • Rising sea levels
Rising sea levels will increase the likelihood of the sort of damaging floods witnessed in 2000/2001 and loss of prime land eg in the Scilly Isles.
  • Increased pollution
River pollution may increase as lower rainfall means that there is less water to dilute pollutants.
