South West England is widely seen as one of the most desirable regions to live in.
The population is
- Forecast to grow by over 3/4 million by 2026.
- 80% of this increase will be people aged 60 and over.
But problems lurk behind this image of a retirement and tourist idyll.
The large distances between major towns and dispersed population make it the most car dependent region in England.
And the landscape and coast are particularly vulnerable to climate change.

Friends of the Earth is working on the following campaigns:

This plan will determine how the region develops for the next 20 years. - Transport
Planned expansion of key roads and airports conflicts with the aim of sustainable development. - Climate change
Every aspect of life in South West England faces an uncertain future because of climate change.
