New green jobs in the North East
4 October 2010

Manufacturer Corus has announced the creation of 200 green jobs linked to investment in offshore wind.

The announcement follows a recent Friends of the Earth submission to a parliamentary inquiry into the closure of the Teesside Cast Products plant.

New jobs

It's great news for the people of Teesside - 1,700 of whom were left out of work last winter when the Corus plant closed.

The development of new offshore wind farms in the North Sea presents a huge opportunity. Making components for the sector could be part of a shift to a low-carbon economy.

A recent report by manufacturers' organisation EFF showed that 90% of the components needed to build the planned London Array wind farm would be imported.

Homegrown skills

The Corus plant will be able to use the region's engineering skills and expertise.

It's a step in the right direction for the renewables industry in the North East.
