Campaigners are celebrating a legal victory which will help save a beautiful area of the Peak District National Park.
Longstone Edge was being destroyed by uncontrolled limestone quarrying.
A coalition of campaigners, including Friends of the Earth, came together to save Longstone Edge.
Legal victory for campaigners
This has been a long-running legal battle which ended in the Court of Appeal.
It's an important decision and could act as a precedent for other quarries in the Peak District and beyond.
This is fantastic news, and a huge relief. We are really happy to see a more considered view has been taken about what the planning permission means, and that this iconic Peak District landscape is being saved.

Further action necessary
But more needs to be done.
The coalition doesn't think the judgment is enough to protect the site.
Although this is marvellous news, it isn't necessarily the end of the story. We're now calling on DEFRA to buy out the planning permission completely. Only this will make Longstone Edge absolutely safe from future unscrupulous quarrying.
