Tunbridge Wells latest council to sign petition to Chris Huhne8 February 2011
At a packed public meeting with the Decentralisation Minister Greg Clark MP, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council announced their support for local carbon budgets.
Friends of the Earth are calling for carbon budgets which would set CO2 emissions targets for every local area.
And we want more money and less hassle to help councils get behind cost-effective green measures like insulating homes and improving public transport.
This would:
- Create jobs
- Slash fuel bills
- Reduce climate-changing CO2 emissions
The council signed Friends of the Earth's petition to the Government from local councils calling for local carbon budgets to be introduced.
And Greg Clark announced he would call on Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker MP to roll out local carbon budgets to all councils as soon as possible.
Craig Bennett, Friends of the Earth's Policy and Campaigns Director who also spoke at the meeting, commented:
Congratulations to the council for supporting local carbon budgets as a way to ensure that councils everywhere lead on action to address carbon dioxide emissions. We're delighted that they're taking climate change seriously and calling on Government for more guidance to local councils and communities to bring about faster cuts in emissions.
Kate Sergeant, from Tunbridge Wells Friends of the Earth (who organised the meeting), said:
Government action is required to ensure that every council plays its part in meeting UK climate targets. Councils need proper support from Government to meet these carbon budgets, including more money to fund green projects.
