Road transport in the West Midlands

The Government ran a consultation on options for increasing capacity on the M6:

• 9,500 people responded to the consultation.
• 98% were against the plans.

The Government claimed that despite this response there was 'no consensus' on the proposals.

It has instructed the Highways Agency to develop plans to widen the M6 across Staffordshire and Cheshire.

The scheme could cost up to £3 billion and threaten nature sites like Doxey and Tillington Marshes which are an important habitat for breeding and wintering birds.

And there is no evidence that the new eight-lane superhighway will not become as congested as the current six-lane M6.

We will be working with communities across the region to ensure that our voices are heard through the crucial planning process for this destructive scheme.
