Keeping it legal
There are some rules and regulations to keep in mind when organising your event.
Insurance
You're responsible for the events that you organise.
Friends of the Earth cannot accept liability or responsibility for anything that might happen to people or property as a result of your event.
If you're holding a public event you may need public liability insurance. Some venues such as schools, community centres and workplaces may already have public liability insurance, so it's worth checking your venue.
First Aid
Depending on the type of event and number of guests, you may need first aid cover.
Speak to your local council or St Johns Ambulance if you think first aid support is required.
Food
You'll need to follow the Food Standards Agency guidelines for preparing, handling and cooking food.
If caterers are involved make sure they have a Food Hygiene Certificate and Public Liability Insurance.
Alcohol
Some venues are licensed.
If yours isn't, contact your local council to find out more about temporary licenses.
Licenses
If you're holding a large event you may need to inform the local council and police.
You may also need special public entertainment or collection licenses.
Collections
It's illegal to carry out house-to-house or public street collections without a license.
You can collect on private property but only with permission from the owner or manager of the property.
Raffles and lotteries
There are lots of regulations around raffles and lotteries - and some require a license.
Organise a private or small lottery and you won't need a license.
Private lottery: Raffles at a workplace or club. The raffle must be held on the premises and it must be clear who is running it.
Small lottery: Raffles held as part of a bigger event, where no cash prizes are given. You must sell tickets and announce the winner during the event. You can't spend more then £250 on prizes, but there's no limit on the value of donated items.
