Itinerary
Starting early the trek begins south along the tracks of the Avon Valley, before reaching a large expanse of MOD training land. With unique access to this flora and fauna rich land, we cross the Salisbury Plain on a route rarely accessible to walkers. We'll then head north to join the White Horse trail to Pewsey, where we'll pass the village's unique white chalk horse, originally cut in 1785.
The route then drops down to the village of Alton Barnes, where we follow the Kennett and Avon canal passed farmland before reaching the half-way point, near the River Avon.
Skirting a prehistoric long-barrow, we climb steeply onto a ridge for great views through open valleys. The area is famous for it's crop circles, so keep an eye out. We'll then pass Silbury Hill, the tallest prehistoric human-made mound in Europe. The purpose of the 4,750 year old chalk remains unknown, but would have taken 18 million man-hours to construct.
It's then onto the Avebury finish line, among the unique landscape of stone circles and barrows.
