When I get odd socks I cut finger holes in them and use them as mittens for working outside (or even inside if it's really bitter and I'm having an economy drive with the heating).  Admittedly they don't last long  unless you spend and hour or so blanket stitching around them because the holes tend to join up, but as least it gives them a further, if short, lease of life.

I also keep a pair over the top ends of our metal, extendable step/ ladder so that when the metal rests against the wall you don't get those grey scrape marks.

I have also used them as dusters and polishing cloths.  Just put one on your hand and away you go, although cotton ones are better than wool ones and those horrible nylon ones are no use at all.

(I'm glad that our family isn't the only one that the sock monster visits!)

P.S.  We wear all sorts of odds and ends under our boots and wellies - nobody sees them except family and friends and they're all doing the same thing.

I just wear my odd socks. They're only socks - it really doesn't matter if they don't match!

The boyf only wears black socks. He doesn't get odd ones.

I managed to reduce the number of odd socks - by stuffing them in a drawstring bag made from an old string vest - in theory it keeps them from disappearing in the washing machine  Huh

Still have the odd 'odd' sock though - one of life's mysteries  Wink

What gets worn for gardening and hiking is more what's first to hand in that drawer - the worms don't care  Grin

I tend to keep mine stuffed into the side of the washing basket waiting for them to be reunited with their pair - which never seems to happen. So it's a bit pointless.

Using them for cleaning seems the best idea, but I'm sure if I do the other half of the pair will reappear......  :-/

No one knows where the socks have gone, or indeed how many have gone. The nature and meaning of their disappearance has never been convincingly explained by those in power. (Check - you will find no government statements ANYWHERE about the disappearance of socks). Will we ever see any of them again? What likelihood is there that any of them will be reunited with their grieving partners?

Should FOE demand an independent enquiry?

lol... I wear black also. When one sock is beyond repair you just wait for another to get into the same state leaving you with a good pair of the same colour!

i use mine for polishing shoes and furnature.

However, I had about 15 of them which I finally recycled (clothing collection bin) as I was fed up with waiting for the other ones to show up.

The next week I got another odd sock and now I have another 15!!!

what is the mystery??  I wash at home so no they haven't disappeared in the public machines.

I find them useful for filling the holes in mattresses, particularly if you'd had to cut a broken spring (bolt cutters are ideal for this work.) and you need some padding material.

For socks I recommend;

I've had pairs still going strong after 20 years of use!

See what others had to say about them;

  • Wear odd socks (if I'm not going out anywhere Smiley )
  • Wear odd socks if I'm doing DIY or in the garden where I'm going to get dirty/sweaty
  • Use them as cloths, eg to clean car wheels

I tend to darn the holes if one of the pair goes first to try and stop it happening.
Most of my socks are black and look the same anyway.
