Better energy efficiency in our homes is the only permanent solution to fuel poverty and will drive down household energy bills.

We are supporting the Energy Bill Revolution coalition. Please ask your MP to do the same.

This will take just a minute, but it will let your MP know you care about this issue and want them to as well.

As a constituent you have the most influence over your MP - so a simple email from you can make all the difference.

Re: Time to end the scandal of cold homes

Cold, badly insulated homes damage the health of our most vulnerable citizens, including older people, children and people with disabilities. This costs the NHS almost 1bn GBP annually. Over 4.5 million UK households are now in fuel poverty.

In addition our homes are responsible for about a quarter of the UK's carbon emissions.

I want you to support decisive action to deal with this crisis.

Existing policies are entirely inadequate. The initial take up of the Green Deal - just 245 households - shows that, while numbers might rise in the coming months, it won't deliver the transformation of the housing stock needed without considerable additional support.

And the Energy Company Obligation is only expected to take 250,000 out of fuel poverty by 2023 - just 5% of the current total. At the same time energy efficiency funding for low income households has been cut.

But there is a fair and permanent solution - a nationwide programme of investment in energy efficiency. By doing this we can have warm homes, cut carbon emissions and reduce our fuel bills. It is also one of the best things we can do to boost the economy.

To fund this the Government could use the money it will get in the coming years from carbon taxes and trading. This could improve 600,000 homes a year - taking 9 out of 10 households out of fuel poverty.

Carbon taxes and trading should help to promote low-carbon generation but they will also increase household bills. So using the money they bring in to cut bills though energy efficiency is essential if they are not to have a negative impact on households.
