Ask Lancashire Council to halt fracking until impacts understood

Cuadrilla , the company testing for shale gas in Lancashire, wants to extend its planning permission at one of its sites, allowing it to drill and test-frack until March 2014.

Evidence from the United States links fracking for shale gas to water contamination and air pollution.

And shale gas is a fossil fuel. More fossil fuels will make it virtually impossible to meet our legally-binding climate change targets. Instead we need to generate most of our electricity from renewable sources.

This is a vitally important test case. What happens in Lancashire could affect what happens in the rest of the country.

Dear Sir / Madam, Application number 08/12/1032 I am writing to object to the above application by Cuadrilla Resources Ltd to extend planning permission for test-drilling and fracking in Becconsall, West Lancashire. I believe that fracking poses serious risks to human health and the local environment and the precautionary principle should be applied. A recent report for the European Commission identified water contamination, water resource depletion, air pollution, biodiversity impacts and noise as high risk concerns. The Becconsall site is adjacent to the protected Ribble Estuary RAMSAR site, an internationally important habitat for wildlife including wintering wildfowl. There are also economic risks to the important farming and tourism sectors in Lancashire. I further believe that the extraction and use of shale gas will make it much harder to meet our legally-binding climate change targets and fulfil commitments in the Lancashire Climate Change Strategy. Lancashire County Council says it has an important role to play in tackling climate change. As such it should be promoting expansion of renewable energy rather than the extraction of more fossil fuels. Investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency will secure a clean and green energy supply for the future and create thousands of new jobs for the county and across the UK. Please keep me informed of the progress of this application and opportunities to comment further.
