Tar sands - counting the cost9 April 2010
Friends of the Earth Europe and Fair Pensions are asking for your support to stop the development of tar sands.
Efforts to tackle climate change are under threat from decisions being made in the next few weeks.
Very soon, shareholders in BP (15 April) and Shell (18 May) will get to vote for - or against - a resolution on tar sands.
What are tar sands?
Tar sands (or oil sands) are among the world's dirtiest fuels.
Their extraction produces on average three times more greenhouse gases than conventional oil.
The pollution, deforestation and wildlife disturbance associated with tar sands developments also threaten the health and livelihoods of indigenous communities.
Shareholder action
The resolutions on tar sands are already supported by some major investors.
But we need you to use the power of your pension or savings to force a review of this damaging and risky activity.
You can express your concerns directly to your pension provider or (if you don't have one) by emailing one of BP and Shell's largest shareholders.
