Call on UK to support EU plans to ban oil from tar sands
22 July 2011

Producing oil from tar sands emits around 3 times more greenhouse gases than conventional oil production.

Did you know?

Tar sands are a mixture of low quality oil, sand, clay and water. Huge amounts of energy and water are needed to extract the oil and refine it. In the Canadian province of Alberta, huge areas of pristine forest are being destroyed.

The EU is currently considering how to implement the Fuel Quality Directive, a new law which aims to reduce emissions from transport fuel.

And EU law makers have the chance to effectively ban oil from tar sands from being imported into the EU by making sure they are included in this new law.

But the UK Government is opposing EU action.

It's bending under pressure from the oil industry and the Canadian Government to water down the law and keep out the clause on tar sands.

Please ask Transport Minister Norman Baker to support the inclusion of oil from tar sands in the Fuel Quality Directive without delay.
