A picture says a thousand words

They say life begins at 40 - and fortunately for me that's something I still have a while to look forward to.

Yet it's also a milestone which can cause many to pause and reflect on the sometimes unexpected path life takes.

So hopefully you'll forgive us for indulging in a little nostalgia this summer and look back at 4 decades of successes and frustrations - and how our campaigning has always been driven by a determination that we can make the world a greener and fairer place for everyone to live.

It's in that vein that The Guardian is asking everyone to submit their photos charting Friends of the Earth's history as we celebrate our 40th birthday - along with other stalwarts of the environmental movement celebrating theirs this year, Greenpeace and WWF.

The Guardian's environment site editor Adam Vaughan told us he hopes to see lots of pictures scanned in from dusty shoe boxes and dog-eared old albums.

You can upload snaps to the Guardian's Flickr group here - with the chance they'll be featured in The Guardian itself.

The first 4 decades are as much your story as they are ours, so please help us share in celebrating a momentous 40 years by submitting your best snaps - and inspire the next generation of activists to campaign for the next 40. Thank you.
