Get yourself to the cinema this weekend
I'm a big film fan, so I was very excited when Friends of the Earth decided to sponsor the first UK Green Film Festival. I was even more excited when I saw the films being shown included some old classics as well as UK premieres.
The festival line-up really is eclectic, from cheesy popcorn flick Godzilla to documentary Wasteland about Rio de Janeiro garbage pickers.
Animation also gets a look-in. If you haven't seen Wall-E, then this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy it on the big screen. I struggled to see how a little robot that doesn't speak could really engage me, but believe me, this is Disney magic at its finest - and with a subtly powerful message about valuing our planet to boot
I was also lucky enough to be able try my hand at being the next Barry Norman by viewing a preview copy of PLANEAT before its premiere this weekend.
The film makes its case for a plant-based diet, focusing on three men's lifelong research into the health and environmental implications of eating meat and dairy. Since I started working for Friends of the Earth I've been following my colleagues' advice on the multiple benefits of eating less and better meat. But unlike the guys in the film, I don't support the idea that we need to adopt a vegan diet. It was however a compelling film and I marveled at some of the world's most beautiful vegan food that was showcased.
Alongside the new films, there are still plenty of golden oldies I have yet to see. Seeing as I seem to be the only one in the green world not to have seen The Age of Stupid, I think I'll start with that. Or maybe Day of the Triffids. Oh, but what about Battle for Terra....
The UK Green Film Festival runs this weekend 20 - 22 May in Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester and London.
