Lucy Porter on comedy and her carbon footprint14 September 2011
Lucy Porter is part of an all-star line up at our comedy fundraiser Laugh or the Polar Bear Gets It.
How did you start in comedy?
I was a writer working for Granada television in Manchester, but then I started doing my own stuff to prove that I was funny. I did my first gig in Chester where I thought no one would know me.
How do you write a joke?
It comes to you in the bath. So I have to have a lot of baths; I'm a very clean comedian.
What makes you laugh?
At the moment it's my husband's songs about my daughter's wee and poo.
Tell us a joke
A woman's looking in the mirror and she says to her husband, "I look old, fat and ugly. Give me a compliment." And her husband says: "Well, Darling, your eyesight's spot on."
Guilty pleasures?
I do like a lot of rubbish telly but also women's magazines that you're not supposed to read. Those with their tales you're not supposed to like - like "My womb exploded" or "My husband left me for a clown".
How green are you?
My real footprint is tiny and I think my carbon footprint is pretty small. I've been trying to use reusable nappies but I occasionally use disposables. I do try though. But the more you start trying you realise how far you've got to go.
Laugh or the Polar Bear Gets It is at the Hammersmith Apollo, London, on 18 November 2011. Tickets from £19.50.
